Netvue Updated Its Custom Alexa Skill with More Comprehensive Home Security Features and A Custom UI
Very recently, Netvue updated its “Netvue” Amazon Alexa Custom Skill with a series of home security features, making the company the first smart home security brand in the industry to offer such comprehensive features on Amazon Alexa. These features contain not only viewing operations which are already available in this update, but also control operations like turning on/off motion detections in the coming future. By now Netvue supports both Amazon Alexa’s pre-built skill and custom skill.
“Netvue Live Video” Pre-Built Skill v.s. “Netvue” Custom Skill
Amazon Alexa has two types of skill models: pre-built skill model, and custom skill model. Pre-built skill model like “Smart Home Skill” has better integration with Amazon Alexa. You can directly speak to Alexa to use the skills. Whereas custom skill model has better flexibility, meaning manufacturers can provide more features upon Alexa and not limited by what Amazon has pre-defined. But with custom skills, users have to enter the skills by saying its invocation name first, under which circumstances users are not allowed to use other skills until they exit the current skill.

Prior to this update, we have already launched an Alexa Skill called “Netvue Live Video” built upon Amazon Alexa’s pre-built model – Smart Home Skill. Amazon’s Smart Home Skill model only supports some of the home security product features like live video and simple controls, from which we choose the feature that is most frequently used in day to day life and developed “Netvue Live Video” Alexa Skill which can only watch live video recorded from Netvue products. But since it’s a pre-built skill, you can directly see the live video by saying “Alexa, show me the front door” without saying “Alexa, open Netvue” first.
The “Netvue” custom skill is built upon the custom model, which has better flexibilities and doesn’t rely on Amazon Alexa’s available capability on smart home security features. This is why the updated “Netvue” skill has more features than “Netvue Live Video” skill. The “Netvue” skill also supports more Alexa-enabled devices, with or without a screen, comparing to the previous “Netvue Live Video” skill which only supports Alexa-enabled devices with a screen to play the video.
What’s New About “Netvue” Custom Skill?
This updated “Netvue” Amazon Alexa Custom Skill allows users to do more things on the Alexa-enabled devices including:
- Check available Netvue devices as a device list - Check device status like network connection and more - Watch live video - See recorded events like motion detections and ring notifications - Replay recorded videos
The update even includes a custom UI for Alexa-enabled devices like Amazon Echo Show to control by both voice and touch. This skill also works with the Alexa-enabled devices that are without a screen, in which case all the inquiries you send to Alexa for Netvue devices will be responded with the voice from Alexa.
How to enable the “Netvue” Custom Skill?
To enable the Alexa Skill, simply goes to the Alexa App installed on your phone and search “Netvue” on the Skills. Enable the “Netvue” Alexa Skill and follow the steps as required like linking your Amazon account to your Netvue account. After finishing all the steps, the skill should be up and run on your Alexa-enabled devices.
“Netvue Live Video” v.s. “Netvue”, Which One Should I Use?
If most of the time you are using Alexa-enabled devices just to watch the live video, we would recommend you to use the “Netvue Live Video” skill which should save you a couple steps in order to watch the live video. But if you are into the other features we are offering with the “Netvue” skill, feel free to enable it on Alexa App and start using it!
An Alternative Control End to Netvue Devices
The smart speakers are becoming an alternative control end to the other smart home devices. Netvue embraces the future by not only introducing A.I. capabilities like voice interaction and facial recognition to its products but also making its products compatible with the smart home automation systems. By now 60%-70% of the things you can do on Netvue App to Netvue devices are available on the “Netvue” Custom Skill. It significantly increases the convenience of using Netvue’s smart home security products for those who have already adopted the Amazon Alexa smart home automation system to their house.
With more abilities becoming available on Amazon Alexa and being released to the manufacturers, Netvue will continue to improve its integration with Amazon Alexa and enrich more features upon the platform. Stay tuned!
